Outreach Programs![]()
Our neighbors and neighborhoods are an important focus of our Christian mission. Calvary/St. George’s provides the city’s longest running co-ed homeless shelter along with food programs, referrals, and a new collaboration that will support older people living at home in our neighborhood. Our outreach programs are run by volunteers, and are supported by gifts and donations to our Thrift Store and generous financial donations. (Please make checks in support of these ministries payable to Calvary St. George’s Church and mail your donations to the Parish Office, 209 E. 16th Street, New York, NY 10003.
Food Pantry
![]()
The Food Pantry is a vital and long-standing element in our outreach into the broader community. Many of our neighbors find themselves short of the resources for an ample and nourishing diet because of the effects of HIV/AIDS and other illnesses, lack of proper housing, disruptions in steady and gainful employment and other contingencies. About 100 men, women and children visit our door each week for a bag of non-perishable food to help them get through a weekend, when many weekday feeding programs are not available. Tons of food are provided each year with aid from Partnership for the Homeless and the Emergency Food Assistance Program.

Homeless Shelter
![]()
The Homeless Shelter has been open every night of the year since February 1982, sleeping up to fourteen men and women. All are referred by John Heuss House, a drop-in center affiliated with Trinity Church, which provides them with social and rehabilitation services. Our volunteers, who also spend the night, offer the guests coffee, a light snack and breakfast, and a friendly ear. Our team of volunteers is made up of parishioners and other community residents. The program is funded through the City of New York and generous contributions.

Telephone Ministry
![]()
The Telephone Ministry formed in 1981 to keep in touch with parishioners who are unable to participate at Calvary-St. George's because of distance, health or age. Cards are mailed at Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays and other appropriate times. Parishioners who are ill or hospitalized are contacted. We convey the continuing interest and concern of the Parish, share news of Parish happenings, and learn of personal needs requiring the attention of the clergy. Please talk with a member of the clergy if you know of anyone who might welcome being telephoned.

Thrift Shop
![]()
The Thrift Shop provides an opportunity for many on fixed incomes to purchase clothing, household items and various articles at affordable prices. The Thrift Shop Board was established by the Rector in March 1980 to assist him in setting policies for operation and meets throughout the year. The Parish is grateful to each Board member and the many volunteers who work for the Thrift Shop.
